We have today (29 January 2021) had the following petition approved and published by RBWM Democratic Services:

We the undersigned petition The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead to:

hold a local poll, under Section 116 of the Local Government Act 2003, to give residents a voice and a choice on any proposed changes to Council Tax or Discretionary services.

The reason for the petition: The Cabinet's proposal to lobby central government for greater flexibility to increase the council tax was agreed by council on 14 October 2020.

What the Cabinet's proposal means to you: If the Government increases the current 2% cap, then you may have no choice in the decision and see your council tax rise. If the Government does not increase the 2% cap then you may see further cuts in your discretionary services of circa £9m+ each year up until the financial year 2025 (if no other means can be identified to fill the gap in funding, as outlined by the Cabinet in the Medium Term Financial Strategy).

We believe you should be guaranteed a voice and a choice in any decision to change council tax or discretionary services.

If you agree, please sign this petition, ask the Council to give you that choice."

Please note that we have had to resubmit various iterations of our original petition (initially submitted on 11 January 2021, detailed below) – in order to get this final version above approved:

We the undersigned petition The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead to:
'hold a referendum in order to give residents a voice in establishing Council Tax in 2022/23'

The Cabinet proposal to lobby central government to increase the council tax above the 2% cap was agreed by council.  We believe residents should be guaranteed a voice in making this decision through the legally binding mechanism of a referendum
